Peace

My name is Etienne Marais and I am 18 years
old. I am a born-again Christian and I will keep
on praying for peace in Israel. I would like to
tell the world how much God loves them and
I will keep on praying for their salvation.

Kind regards
Etienne Marais

It is remarkable how most of the world can look on at the bloody Israeli assault on Gaza and do absolutely nothing. Benyamin Netanyahu's nephew, now at school in the US, said the situation was much more complex than a simple election ploy. He spent a year and a half in an Israeli jail because he would not serve in the Israeli armed forces. And I believe there is some validity to his statement. After all, HAMAS did not send rockets into Israel during the cease-fire until after Israel closed the iron ring around Gaza to starve out the residents and deny them both food and medical supplies while still sending in its killer teams and rocket-firing helicopters. In short, the cease-fire was pretty one sided. The United States did the same thing in the American west a century ago with disastrous results for the peoples native to the area. This is part of the problem. The United States is the most successful example of a colonial settler state in modern times. I cannot shake the feeling that the Israelis intend to do the same thing, that is, to ethnic-cleanse the whole of Gaza and the West Bank. They need not be in a hurry, because there is no government that will oppose them. All have been either bought off or bullied into submission by the US Empire. That's the way of empires. As for Europe, it wasn't so long ago that they were dividing up the "third World" among themselves. So who is the real terrorist? He who defends his home or he who covets that home? I think the answer is very clear.

Are you optimistic that Israel & Palestine can reach a peace deal this year?

Well Said!

“Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere... and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding. Why? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights.”

- Edward Said

This brief review of Israel’s record over the past four decades makes it difficult to resist the conclusion that it has become a rogue state with "an utterly unscrupulous set of leaders". A rogue state habitually violates international law, possesses weapons of mass destruction and practises terrorism - the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. Israel fulfils all of these three criteria; the cap fits and it must wear it. Israel’s real aim is not peaceful coexistence with its Palestinian neighbours but military domination. It keeps compounding the mistakes of the past with new and more disastrous ones. Politicians, like everyone else, are of course free to repeat the lies and mistakes of the past. But it is not mandatory to do so.

Link Free Gaza
We are these human rights observers, aid workers, and journalists. We have years of experience volunteering in Gaza and the West Bank at the invitation of Palestinians. But now, because of the increasing stranglehold of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine, many of us find it almost impossible to enter Gaza, and an increasing number have been refused entry to Israel and the West Bank as well. Despite the great need for our work, the Israeli Government will not allow us in to do it.
